When we heat magnesium ribbon in air, it burns with a dazzling white flame and the ash formed is magnesium oxide. The reaction is. 2Mg +O2 gives 2MgO. When you dissolve this ash in water you get hydroxide of Mg, that is magnesium hydroxide. MgO + H2O gives Mg (OH)2
