Metal such as potassium and sodium react so vigorously that they catch fire if kept in the open. Hence , to protect them and to prevent accidental fire's , they are kept immersed in kerosene oil .

Sodium metal is highly reactive. If it is kept open it can explosively react with oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture present in the air. They catch fire and start burning.To prevent this explosive reaction and the After Effects sodium is kept immersed in kerosene oil.

Lithium, Sodium and potassium are also kept in kerosene oil they are also very reactive and catch fire easily.
