Grignard reagent is prepared by reacting alkyl(or)aryl(or)vinyl halide with magnesium in the presence of dry ether.
CH3CH2Br + Mg → CH3CH2MgBr
In the preparation of grignard reagent perfectly dry ether is required because Mg is a highly reactive metal it can easily reacts with water i.e side reactions will takes place.
Hence yield of the product will be reduced.
