The molecular orbital of O2 molecule places all the electrons ( 8 and 8, In the figure the lowest 1S bonding and 1S antibonding accommodating 4 electrons are omitted ) , the arrangement of rest 12 electrons are shown) ) filled in such a way that from energy point of view all the electrons to be filled with lower energy orbital first . In this way we get fill up of electrons like : You can see that highest two electrons are in degenerate ( same energy ) two orbitals each have same energy and not paired so oxygen is paramagnetic with two unparied electrons.
