Sun is at the farthest distance during sunset and sunrise.the white light from the sun gets scattered as it travels towards the earth. The blue colour gets scattered the most, the light reaching the eye has white light minus blue light scattered away. red light which is relatively less scattered reaches us the max. hence the sun appears red.

Sun appears red at the time of sun rise and sun set because at the time of sun rise and sun set sun are maximum distance from the earth and this distance are covered by red colour.
