Red plants still have chlorophyll (chlorophyll is always green in colour). Sometimes the green chlorophyll is masked or covered up by the presence of other pigments such as anthocyanin and carotenoids. Actually these are carotenoids that trap the energy from sunlight and hands it over to chlorophyll, which converts this solar energy into chemical energy (in the form of food) . Now, when chlorophylls are masked by anthocyanins and carotenoids energy can still be passed from carotenoids to chlorophylls . In this way, the plants with red leaves (like red spinach) prepare their food.

Red plant also make their own food by using the pigment because chlorophyll is not a colour it is a pigment which catch the the sunlight so that the red colour leaves catch the sunlight on his own leaves
