Toothpaste contains those things which are basic in nature so when we eat anything the pH our mouth is acidic so so when we brush our teeth the acidic level goes down and our mouth becomes basic in nature . Therefore toothpaste help in preventing tooth decay

Bacteria present in mouth causes tooth decy by making acid with sweet things. Toothpaste is alkaline in nature that neutralize pH of acid level in mouth

Bacteria present in our mouth produces acid by degradation of sugar and food remaining after eating which lead the ph of mouth less than 5.5 and cause tooth decay. Toothpaste neutralizes the excess acid and prevent tooth decay.
