The tax on the salt and the government's monopoly right over its production made Mahatma Gandhi very much disturbed. In his opinion, it was a gross atrocity on the part of thr the British government. Salt was something consumed by rich and the poor alike and it was one of the most essential food items . Hence it should be exempted from any tax. He sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin on 31st January 1930 with eleven demands . These demands are concerned with the interests of all sections of Indian people. The most stirring of all was the demand to make salt tax- free. But Irwin showed recultance and took the warning lightly. Gandhiji started his famous salt march over 240 miles from Sabarmati ashram to Gujarati costal town of Dandi accompanied by his 78 trusted volunteers. On 6th April 1930 he reached Dandi and openly and ceremonially violated thr the salt law by manufacturing salt by boiling sea water. People were now asked to not only to refuse cooperation but also to break colonial laws. Gandhiji's salt march proved to be a important milestone in the history of Indian national movement. People from all walks of life participated in this historic movement. Thus this marked the beginning of Civil Disobedience movement

In 1930 as part of civil disobedience movement ,Gandhiji started his famous DANDI MARCH from Sabarmathi to Dandi (salt satyagraha)
