The process of adding hydrogen to an unsaturated compound is called hydrogenation.
Example: Ethene gives ethane as a product on hydrogenation.
Conditions for Hydrogenation:
i) Unsaturated compound i.e., unsaturated hydrocarbon should be present.
ii) Presence of a catalyst such as finely divided palladium or nickel.
During hydrogenation of vegetable oils, liquid unsaturated fatty acids are converted into solid saturated fatty acids.
