With oxygen, carbon forms carbon dioxide. To attain electronic configuration of nearest noblr gas, carbon needs 4 electrons and oxygen needs 2 electrons. In CO2, each atom shares 2 electrons with carbon. Electronic configuration of carbon is 2, 4 and of oxygen is 2,6. O=C=O.
