Bholi or Sulekha, the main character of the story, is a simpleton and has black pock marks on her body. As a child she was neglected by her family who gave up on thinking she would never find a suitable match. As a matter of chance, Bholi was sent to school where she met her saviour. Her teacher encouraged her and transformed her into a courageous and dignified young girl. Sulekha refused to marry Bishambar when he asked her fathe rfor dowry. She was self reliant and respectful towards her parents. She decided to work in the school and sustain herself and take care of her parents in their old age. Sulekha is, in every sense , a winner.
