Somnath Lahiri was born in 1901 in West Bengal. He passed away in 1984. He was an Indian statesman and a leader of the Communist Party of India. Somnath Lahiri was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India from Bengal. The Constituent Assembly consisted of indirectly elected representatives. It was established to draft a Constitution for India. The Assembly met for the first time on 9 December 1946, in New Delhi. Its last session was held on 24 January 1950.

He also served as a Member of the West Bengal legislative assembly. He was a writer and editor by profession.
