1.) Carbon atom is tetravalent i.e it have four electrons in it's last shell. Therefore it shares electrons by forming covalent bonds. 2.) Carbon atom form long chains from other carbon atoms. This property is known to be as catenation.

Because it can form single, double and triple bonds. It can also forms chain, branched chain and rings when connected to other carbon atoms.
