the port city of surat developed on the left bank of the river it became india's chief port under the mughals it was linked to bengal by a trading route through it was an important centre of textile trade it had used banking houses whose hundis(bill of exchange) were honored overseas it had flourishing shipbuilding industries too it lost its importance when the calcutta, madras, bombay and delhi became india's metro cities
