We observe random wavering or flickering of the objects near a fire on a very hot day due to atmospheric refraction. The air just above the fire become hotter than the air further up. Hot and is lighter than cold air above it. Refractive index of the hot air is slightly less than that of the cold air. Since, the density does not remain the same , the Apparent position of the object as seen through hot air ,fluctuates.
