1. Paper from China: silk route helped to reach paper Europe from China in the 11th century. Thereon, paper made possible the production of the manuscript by transcribers.
2. Role of travelers and explorers: in the year 1295, Marco Polo (a traveler) after years of exploration brought the technology of wood printing with him in Italy. Now the Italians could also print their manuscripts.
3. Woodblock printing: it spread all around Europe by the early 15th century. People used the woodblock printing to print textile, playing cards and religious pictures.
4. Johann Gutenberg: He introduced the first printing press in the 1430s. He printed a Bible in 42 lines, generally identified as the Gutenberg Bible. The development of the printing press after Gutenberg can be seen in the fact that similar pieces of the model could be utilized, again and again, to imprint multiple copies.
5. Spread of printing presses: printing presses were set up in various parts of Europe between 1450 and 1550.
