The British government had imposed heavy taxes on salt, which was an ingredient used in every household. Common people could not afford to buy salt, neither were they allowed to make their own salt from the sea. If caught, they were severely punished. Hence Gandhiji wanted to revolt against the British by marching till Dandi in Gujarat and making salt. Here salt symbolises all the basic rights of a citizen taken away by the British.
