The Bolsheviks were the majority group of workers of Russia, while the Mensheviks were the minority group.

  1. The Mensheviks argued that Russia was just beginning the capitalist stage of development, so the main task for them was to alongside providing the workers with a Marxist framework, to help build the democratic, capitalist institution of the state.
  2. The Bolsheviks argued that the stages of history could be ‘telescoped’ and that, as Russia had been imperialist, its capitalist stage could be shortened, allowing for the building of socialism.
