"In Bacteria, Respiratory Functions are Localized to the Plasma Membrane and the Cytoplasm" Bacteria do not have mitochondria, yet most bacterial cells are capable of aerobic respiration. Essentially, the cytoplasm and plasma membrane of a bacterial cell perform the same functions as the mitochondrial matrix and inner membrane, respectively.
