Yogita Ingle 6 years, 2 months ago

Corrosion simply means formation of an oxide layer on the surface of metal which usually has some undesirable effects on the mechanical and chemical properties of metal and is usually undesirable. For iron we call it rusting.
Tarnishing is also corrosion but it is used in the context where lusture of the metal is of importance like for e.g. tarnishing of silver or copper. The basic chemistry between the two phenomenon is the same that is the formation of the oxide layer.

Tarnishing is caused due to reaction of outer layer of a metal with gases like sulphur oxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen etc... Corrosion is caused due to addition of oxygen to a substance.
