The British government arrested the two national leaders of India Dr Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew for their involvement in the protests against the Rowlatt Act, which led to pervasive unrest among the people of Punjab. On April 13, 1919, on the occasion of Baisakhi, the people (men, women and children) of Punjab launched a peaceful protest against their arrest. The British military Commander General Dyer reached the park with soldiers and blocked the entrance of the park. Thereafter he ordered his soldiers to open fire. This firing lasted for ten minutes and killed thousands of people. The massacre ignited the anger of the Indians.
