Because due to crystal field splitting orbitals can divided into 2 parts as a result electron jumps from t2g orbitals to eg orbitals

Halogens appear to be coloured substances becuase in the electrons in these elements in exicted state jump in higher orbitals and thus when comes back to it's original/ground state releases energy which appear to be in different colours

Halogens are coloured due to adsorption of visible libht by thier molecules which results in the excitation of electron by adsorbing visible light of wavelength except 1 which is of particular color
