1) Initially the movement started with middle class participation.

2) Thousands of students left govt. controlled schools and colleges.

3) Headmasters and teachers resigned and lawyers gave up their legal practices .

Effect on economic front :

1) foreign goods boycotted, liquor shops picketed.

2) traders and merchant refused to trade in foreign goods
