The cause of Matilda' ruin was her high ambition.she wanted to move in the high circle of society. She wanted to be loved and admired by the rich and famous. She forgot that she was born poor and that she had married and ordinary clerk. Matilda could have avoided her ruin. She should have been satisfied with what she had. She should not have imitated the rich people. When the necklace was lost, she should have told the truth to Mme Forestier.
