Rowlatt act (1919). This act was passed by imperial legislative council despite the united opposition of the indian members. It gave the government ( British ) enormous powers to repress political activities, and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. Mahatma gandhi wanted non- violent civil disobedience against such unjust laws, which would start with a bartal on 6 april.

Rowlatt Act, (February 1919), legislation passed by the Imperial Legislative Council, the legislature of British India. The acts allowed certain political cases to be tried without juries and permitted internment of suspects without trial to arrest and imprison any person without trial in a court of law.
