- Classification is grouping of organisms on the basis of their form, structure and mode of living. The grouping of related organisms helps us in studying their evolutionary relationships. The hierarchical classification of animals can be represented as the following.
- Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Here, the basic unit of classification is species.
- Species is hence the basic taxonomic category. Species is always monophyletic.
- Species includes all the organisms that are similar to breed and produce fertile offspring.
