Following are the factors responsible for the rise of nationalism in India:
1. Anti-colonial movement: in the struggle against the colonial government people began to discover a sense of their own identity of belonging to one nation.
2. The image of Bharat Mata the national song Vande Mataram and the National Anthem were some of the factors that developed the sense of unity and oneness among people and encouraged people to fight against foreign rule.
3. The folklore played an important role in binding all the communities together against the Western forces that damaged the traditional Indian culture.
4. The cruel policies of the British government including the Salt Act, Rowlett Act, Jallianwala Bagh Massacre etc., made the Indians fight unitedly against their common enemy.
5. Congress made attempts to unite all the sections of the society and fight against the colonial rule.
All these attempts led Indians to launch a common struggle against the Colonial rule.

Introduction of western education was another important factor which paved the way for the growth of nationalism. Three main agencies were responsible for the spread of modem education in India. They were the foreign Christian missionaries, the British Government and the progressive Indians.
