Iodoform is a type of test that can used to differentiate between methanol and ethanol. When ethanol is warmed with Iodine in the presence of Naoh, it forms a yellow colored precipitate.Methanol on the other hand does not react positively to iodoform test.

Iodoform test: Since ethanol contains the grouping CH3-CH and hence ,it gives yellow ppt | of iodoform. OH i.e. CH3-CH2-OH +4I2+6NaOH-----------> CHI3 +HCOONa+5NaI+5H2O (Yellow ppt.) On the other hand,methanol(CH3OH) does not contain the grouping of ---CH(OH)CH3 and hence it does not give the iodoforn test.

Methaol have one carbon . It is poisonous. Ethanol have two carbon. It most commonly used as alcohol and non poisonous to body
