An ammeter is connected in series with the circuit because the purpose of the ammeter is to measure the current through the circuit. Since the ammeter is a low impedance device, connecting it in parallel with the circuit would cause a short circuit, damaging the ammeter and/or the circuit.

Ammeter is just a galvanometer connected with very low resistance shunt in parallel. So that all the current coming inside ammeter will pass.through shunt (which is very less) and the galvanometer will not be damaged by the current . Since shunt is in parallel with galvabomter therefore ammeter is in series with circuit.

Ammeter os connect in series connection in a circuit because ammeter is used to measure the current through the circuit. Since the ammeter is a low inpedence devide connection it in parallel with the circuit would cause short circuit damaging the ammeter and the circuit.
