The spread of the ideas of nationalism and the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire saw the different Balkan nationalities vying for statehood in the 19th century. However, these nationalities were intensely jealous of each other due to ethnic differences and hence sought to expand their territories at each others' expense. At the same time, the bigger colonial powers like Britain, France and Russia too began to intervene in the politics of the region to achieve their strategic goals. This gave birth to a tense crisis situation in the Balkans which ultimately resulted in the First World War.
