  1. When the direction of applied force is in the direction of displacement then work done is said to be positive. e.g. When a body falls under the action of gravity, {tex}\theta = 0 ^ { \circ }{/tex} 
  2. When the direction of applied force is opposite to the direction of displacement then work done is said to be negative. e.g. When brakes are applied on a moving vehicle work done by a braking force is negative.
  3. When the direction of applied force is perpendicular to the direction of displacement then work done is zero. e.g. A coolie carrying a load on his head moves on a horizontal platform, {tex}\theta = 90 ^ { \circ }{/tex} work done is zero.
