nitric acid being a strong oxidising agent oxidises most aniline to form tarry oxidation product.

If direct nitration of aniline is carried, in the presence of these acids, aniline gets protonated to form anilinium ion, which is meta-directing so nitration of aniline gives meta derivative along with ortho and para.

(H2SO4 + HNO3) easily oxidized aniline into tarry complex product due to high e- density on the benzene ring of aniline.

For direct nitration of aniline, nitration mixture is prepared which consists of H2SO4 and HNO3, both being acids. Aniline is a base. When they react acid base neutralization takes place and salt is formed.
