The liberals were the architects of the Revolution of 1848. They supported the ideas of la patrie (the fatherland) and le citoyen (the citizen). It emphasised the notion of a united community enjoying equal rights under a constitution. Politically, it emphasised the concept of government by consent. Since the French Revolution, liberalism had stood for the end of autocracy and clerical privileges, a constitution and representative government through parliament. In social sphere,the liberals also stressed the inviolability of private property. In the economic sphere, liberalism stood for the freedom of markets and the abolition of state-imposed restrictions on the movement of goods and capital.

Consequences of the Movement:

Liberal movements were crushed by the Conservativesold order could not be restoredmonarchs realized the importance of granting concessions to the liberal revolutionariesserfdom and bonded labour was abolishedHungarians weer granted more autonmy in 1867.
