alveoli are grape like structures which are the endings of bronchioles these are those structures which are capable of diffusing the oxygen inhaled from outside and the carbon dioxide which is a by product formed after the process of respiration in human beings because of alveoli the carbon dioxide which is the product of respiration and is not needed by the body is diffused into alveoli and then sent to lungs and finally throughout the body and oxygen which is needed for the process of respiration when it will combine with glucose and break down into pyruvate or lactic acid depending upon the situation because of its need it is diffused inside the body into the blood through alveoli and carried to all the parts of the body for carrying out their function this is how because of their diffusing capacity and increasing area for diffusing they help to maximize exchange of gases
