'Fire' and ' ice' are uses metaphors in this poem. Whereas fire stands for greed ,avarice, cruelty,lust ,conflict, fury etc. Ice stands for intolerance, rigidity, insensitivity coldness , indifference and hatred etc Both their stands for negative qualities detrimental to the advancement of civilization.
