For the purpose of establishing direct control over the weavers in monopolising trade, the British appointed Gomasthas who would supervise thee weavers, collect supplies from them and examine the quality of cloth. This eliminated the system of broker or middlemen.
The weavers had clashes with the Gomasthas who were being rude to them. They were outsiders who had no social attachment with the village. They were not like the supply merchants who use to understand the problems of the weavers and even helped them in need. These Gomasthas entered the village arrogantly with the sepoys and physically assaulted the weavers for delays in work.
The weavers got very low prices for their products and could not even bargain more. They were tied up with the Company for the loans they have taken so thy could not even sell their products to other buyers.
