x + y = 35 ............(1) 4x - 5y = 5 ...............(2) From (1) , x = 35 - y Putting x = 35 - y in (2) we get, 4 ( 35 - y)- 5y = 5 140- 4y - 5y = 5 - 9y = 5 - 140 y = -135/-9 y = 15 x = 35 - 15 = 20
