Dams that have been seen as temples of modern India have not produced the desired results. They are posing a situation of the grave disaster of which land degradation is a major concern.

  1. Regulating and damming of rivers with the construction of large multipurpose projects affect their natural flow causing poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir.
  2. Large reservoirs submerge large tracts of forests, flora and habitat of fauna.
  3. Soil submersion leads to its decomposition over a period of time.
  4. Reservoirs greatly influence the landscape of the river valleys, including the proportion of land to water area as well as the drainage network pattern. Changes in the landscape are also a result of changes in soils, vegetative cover and wildlife.
