Ans. The poem is about the futility of arrogance. Worldly power will die with you and eventually time will destroy every mark you have ever made on the world. The giant statue was the king's attempt at immortal fame but it is broken and only the legs remain.

The writing on the monument is the only thing that survives, its message has become the opposite of what was intended but is still correct. The mighty should despair at the total destruction of his empire as it shows their future. It could be significant that language (the inscription) survives when everything else is destroyed.
