Rising Prices
by Amit
It's a no brainer that the rising prices of essential commodities make life difficult for the common man. The rapid increase in prices of essential commodities has become a major issue in India. The people worst hit by the rising prices are the fixed income groups like salaried people, the labour class and pensioners; the situation gets worse when essential commodities like cooking gas, pulses, sugar, milk, vegetables, edible oils, tea, foodgrains, petrol etc. get beyond the reach of common man.
When supply doesn’t meet demand, prices are bound to increase. So increasing population is a major cause of rising prices. The defective planning and distribution system is another cause and adds to the problem. Moreover, the standard of living has also increased. Now, most people do not get satisfied with the bare necessities of life. They want more things than they needed earlier, and this increasing demand for other things leads to rise in prices.
Ways should be found to deal with this major issue. Hoarders, black marketers and profiteers should be dealt with severely and the public distribution system of essential commodities should be made more efficient. It is suggested that the government should boost the marketing and sales of agriculture produce. In addition, the policy makers should keep the poor and depressed in mind, while formulating and executing economic policies.
