Wurtz reaction is basically a method to make even number carbon Alkanes with the help of alky halides. We cannot obtain odd number carbon Alkanes and methane from this reaction. Reagent use in this reaction is sodium + dry ether. It is a also called coupling reaction and it proceeds throug free radical mechanism (so the reaction intermediate formed is a free radical).

Adolphe Wurtz, is a coupling reaction in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and recently inorganic main group polymers, whereby two alkyl halides are reacted with sodium metal in dry ether solution to form a higher alkane:
