Group reagents in qualitative analysis:
Qualitative analysis schemes are often based on selective precipitation of different cations. On careful selection of reagents and conditions of reactions, groups of ions can be separated on the basis of their reactivity and the solubility of their salts. As the cation gains its optimum concentration needed for precipitation it precipitates and hence allowing us to detect it. According to their properties, cations are usually classified into six groups. Each group has a common reagent which can be used to separate them from the solution. These reagents are called as group reagents.
For example: In 1st analytical group, there are cations which forms insoluble chlorides. As such, the group reagent to separate them is hydrochloric acid
