Firstly suppose that root 2 is a rational number .. so root 2 =p/q where q is not equal to 0 and p and q are co prime... root 2 q =p ..now squaring on both side of the equation .. (root 2 q)= p^2 ...2q^2=p^2 __eqn 1..we know that 2 is a factor of p^2 and 2 is also the factor of p from therom 1.3 that means p=2x now from eqn 1 2q^2 = (2x)^2 ... 2q^2 =4x^2...q^2 =2x^2 ... now we know that p and q are co prime that means our assumption is wrong of root 2 is a rational number that means root 2 is a irrational number .
