Step-1. Formic acid may be reduced to methanol by reacting it with lithium aluminium hydride.
2. Methanol on reaction with PCl5 or SOCl2 will give methyl chloride.
CH3OH + SOCl2 = CH3Cl + HCl + SO2
3. Methyl chloride on reaction with KCN will form CH3CN, which on hydrolysis yields acetic acid.
