(i) When the First World War ended, there were rumours that a harsh peace treaty was going to be imposed on the Ottoman emperor.
(ii) There was also this rumour that the post of Caliph (Khalifa) would be abolished by the Allies powers and Caliph was the spiritual head of Islamic world.
(iii) To defend the Khalifa's temporal powers, a khilafat committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919.
(iv) Ali Brothers started Khilafat movement to defend the powers of Khalifa.

Khilafat movement is a huge nation wide movevement which Gandhi ji launched but he wanted all the people's unity (Muslims and Hindus ),so he approached the Ali brothers who belonged to a group headed by a Islamic leader Khalifa he was also an emperor of the ottoman empire after the defeat of the ottoman empire by turks in World War 1. Now, with the Ali brothers Gandhi just joined hands and made a huge nation wide movement with the support of both Hindu and Muslim people ,this was decided in the Calcutta session of 1920
