Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan was a staunch supporter of non-violence and a great friend/ally of Mahatma Gandhi. ... He belonged to the Pakhtun dominated region called NWFP (North Western Frontier Province), which was a border region, and hence got the nickname of Sarhadi Gandhi which translates in English to Frontier Gandhi.
