The government launched 'Operation Flood', a system of milk cooperatives also known as 'White Revolution' in the year 1966. Under this system, the farmers used to pool together their dairy milk production and classify the milk as per different quality and grading standards. This was then processed and sold to the urban centers. Such a system benefited the farmers by assuring them a fair price for their product in the market. Gujarat exemplarily implemented the system and is presently the hub of milk cooperatives in the country. Due to the successful implementation of milk cooperatives the production of milk was increased by nearly 4 times. Brand Amul is the best known example of the success of milk cooperatives.
