Shanghai became the hub of print culture in China in the 19th century due to the following reasons.
1. Shanghai became an international city as several European powers established their trading outposts in the city. Hence, several western style schools were established in Shanghai.
2. These Western powers imported western printing techniques and mechanical presses to print books to cater to these schools.
3. Shanghai also had large numbers of educated people who could read books printed using the new western style techniques. Books were printed to satisfy the demand of such people.
