Early phase of industrialisation in England is termed as proto industrialisation. Under this system merchants controlled production which was made by a vast number of producers working within their family farms, not in factories.

(i) Even before factories began to be widespread in England and Europe, there was a large-scale industrial production for international market.
(ii) This was not based on factories.
(iii) Many historians now refer to this phase of industrialisation as proto-industrialisation.
