DeMat stands for dematerialisation which helps converting share papers into electronic form as earlier before the advent of technology shares were issued as paper certificates so demat basically is an A/c where the stock brokers deposits ordered share in a electronic form, But if you need paper certificates you can also apply for rematerialisation of your purchased shares (paper certificates are usually used for gifting or other purposes.).
